ABOUT US
The Active Transportation Database (ATDB) was developed to collect and store bicycle, pedestrian, wheelchair, and scooter/skateboard volume counts from infrastructure and planning projects across Southern California. It is expected to serve the following purposes:
  • Provide a standardized methodology for pre and post counts required by the Active Transportation Program (ATP)
  • Allow for agencies that have installed automated counters to store data in order to develop seasonal correction factors for short duration counts and other modal analysis
  • Provide an open data set for researchers interested in analyzing trends in bicycle and pedestrian trips and mode shift
  • Support active transportation planning by providing a “one-stop-shop" of data commonly used in active transportation planning
The ATDB builds off of the Bicycle Data Clearinghouse developed by the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) to expand functionality and incorporate pedestrian trips. All previous counts stored in the Bicycle Data Clearinghouse have been transferred into the new database. Due to changes in the database structure new data includes additional information that is not available for legacy counts from the previous format.
SCAG will be expanding functionality of the ATDB to support data uploads from a variety of formats in the future as the need arises. If the ATDB does not currently support a data upload format that you feel would helpful, please contact atdb-support@berkeley.edu to coordinate development.
The ATDB was developed in partnership with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA). SCAG would like to extend recognition to UCLA for their extended work on maintaining the Bicycle Data Clearinghouse and providing input on the new database.
